Traveling by train can be a unique and engaging experience, especially with Amtrak’s long-distance routes offering stunning landscapes and the chance to connect with fellow travelers on the same journey. Train travel is unlike any other type of travel you have done before, and it requires its own set of tips to be successful. Here are some tips we came up with after our 36 hours on the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle. Let us know what we left off in the comments.

Plan Ahead and Book Early

Amtrak offers a variety of routes, and some can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. This is especially true for one-bedroom accommodations, which sell out the fastest. We waited too long on our last trip, and they were all gone when we went to book. I will say that prices seem cheaper the week before the train goes out, but then you risk it selling out if you wait that long

Choose the Right Class of Service

Amtrak provides several classes of service: Coach, Business, and Sleeper. For long-distance travel, consider a Sleeper car for added comfort and privacy. Sleeper passengers enjoy perks like meals included in the dining car, making the journey more enjoyable. Plus, I imagine it would be difficult to sleep well in the coach chairs for multiple nights.

Pack Smart

Since you might be on the train for a while, pack wisely. Bring snacks, a refillable water bottle, and any personal items you might need. Remember to bring layers; train temperatures can fluctuate. Don’t forget entertainment—books, music, or games can help pass the time. Also, pack light as it can be a pain to access your suitcase if you can’t fit it easily in your room.

Arrive Early

Get to the station early to avoid any last-minute stress. This will give you time to find your platform, grab snacks, and soak in the atmosphere. Most stations have amenities that can enhance your experience, so take advantage of them. Also, if you booked a sleeper car, you usually have access to some type of lounge, which can be nice to relax in.

Stay Connected

Some Amtrak trains offer Wifi, but the service can be spotty, especially in remote areas, and some trains don’t have Wifi at all. Consider downloading movies, shows, or podcasts ahead of time in case you don’t have service.

Bring a Power Strip

Most seats and rooms only have one plug, so be sure to bring a power strip if you want to charge more than one thing.

Interact with Fellow Travelers

One of the joys of train travel is meeting new people. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations in the dining car or lounge. Sharing stories with fellow passengers can lead to new friendships and enrich your travel experience. On my first train trip, I was wary of this but enjoyed meeting new people and learning new stories.

Take in the Scenery

Amtrak’s long-distance routes pass through breathtaking landscapes—from mountains to forests and deserts. Make sure to spend time in the observation car to enjoy panoramic views. If you are going through a stunning part (like the coastline on the Coast Starlight), grab a spot in the observation car early so it doesn’t fill up.

Enjoy the Dining Experience

Amtrak’s dining cars offer a unique experience, with meals prepared onboard. If you’re traveling in a Sleeper car, meals are included, so take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the dining car. The menu varies by route, so check beforehand to know what to expect. If you are in coach, there is normally a cafe where you can purchase snacks.

Be Flexible

Train travel can sometimes be unpredictable due to delays. Embrace the adventure and be prepared for schedule changes. Having a flexible mindset will make your journey more enjoyable and less stressful. We have been delayed up to 9 hours before, even though this long of delays is not common.

Utilize Amtrak’s App

Download the Amtrak app for easy access to your itinerary, real-time train updates, and digital boarding passes. The app can also help you find information about stations, amenities, and dining options on board. It is much easier than keeping track of a traditional ticket.

Dress Comfortably

Comfort is critical when traveling long distances. Wear loose, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk around the train or explore stops along the way. I recommend pajamas that you can change into for sleeping so that it is a little more normal.

Explore Station Stops

Many Amtrak routes include scheduled stops at interesting locations. If time allows, get off and explore a bit! Check ahead for layover durations and use this opportunity to stretch your legs. Most stops are only 10-15 minutes, but getting off the train can feel great after being on it for a while.

Take Advantage of Onboard Amenities

Many long-distance trains offer amenities like a lounge car, dining services, and observation cars. Make sure to explore these spaces, as they can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Bring Snacks

Even if you have meals included in your trip, be sure to bring snacks for the downtime in between. You can never be sure what the cafe will have, so it is best to get the snacks you love instead of buying one you might not love on the train.

Communicate with Staff

Amtrak staff are there to help. If you have questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. They can provide information about the train schedule, amenities, and any changes that might occur. Plus, they will set up your bed for sleep each night and change it back into a seat in the morning.

Document Your Journey

Consider keeping a travel journal or photographing about your experiences. Documenting your journey can be a fun way to reflect on your travels, and many people will ask you about the train when you get back, so it is good to have your thoughts organized.

Conclusion

Traveling on Amtrak can be a fantastic way to see the country and experience a different mode of transportation. By following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. We hope you have a great journey and let us know what we left off in the comments.
